In philosophy, creativity — and, especially, creative thinking (as opposed to creative achievements) — is often associated with imagination. Even scholars who reject a substantial connection between creativity and imagination take this relationship as a starting point for their inquiry. In psychology, however, creative thinking is frequently associated with intelligence.
In this talk, I show that creative thinking does not hold a necessary relationship with imagination. I argue that the most popular view — that sees a minimal sense of imagination as a necessary component of creativity (Carruthers 2002, 2006; Gaut 2003; Hills & Bord 2019; Stokes 2014) — fails to account for creative thinking in a non-trivial sense.
Conversely, creativity is substantially related to intelligence. I plead for a “smart creativity” hypothesis: some relevant broad abilities of intelligence associated with expertise are necessary and major factors of creative thinking.
This view makes sense of the popular idea that creativity is an intellectual virtue (Zagzebski 1996; Kieran 2014; Gaut 2014; Grant 2018). Smart creativity also helps us identify the specific kind of praise for people thinking “outside the box” — that may be distinguished from praise for people who perform creative achievements in another way.
